Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Blog

Since our website re-launch at the beginning of January we have been monitoring our search engine positioning.  We decided that we would make some of our progress available to view and each month we will update our blog to keep you informed on our search engine positioning.  As a Colchester based company, we decided to share information on our progress for specific Colchester search terms featured as part of our SEO program.

The graphs used throughout the blog show the page listing for specific keywords in the search engine Google.  The keywords with a score of 100 were not listed in Google at the time of research.  We have decided to base our blog on Google results as it used for more than 70% of Internet searches.

SEO: January 2008
This month we decided to re-launch our website with a new look and feel.  Part of our re-launch included focusing on online marketing using search engines.  After launching a new website and a new approach to online marketing, we carried out some research on where our website listed for common search terms related to our services.  It soon became apparent that we were not ranking well in search engines and as a business that uses online marketing; we knew that some action was required to resolve our search engine listings.  Through some careful planning and research we set our targets for search engine optimisation for the next few months focusing on a number of search keywords.

SEO: February 2008
From last months planning and research, we implemented our search engine optimising techniques over the end of January and beginning of February.  At the end of this month, we monitored how our ten selected search keywords for our blog had ranked in the search engines.

We soon found that searches for our chosen search terms for Colchester produced a big difference from the search terms based around “Essex”.  The Essex search terms where ranking mainly in the first and second page from our first set of optimisation changes, while our Colchester search terms were largely outside the first three pages and not even in Google at all:

From the results we knew which search terms we would need to focus on for next month to improve our search positioning.

SEO: March 2008
We were now into our second month of optimisation changes have noticed some changes in our search engine positioning.  Our positioning for Colchester search terms had seen a steady increase this month as shown below:

Despite the slight increase in search positioning through our changes, we aim to achieve higher search rankings for next month.

SEO: April 2008
This month has shown a big increase in search engine positioning for our search terms as a result of last months optimising.  The graph shows the six search terms that were originally not in the first ten pages of Google are now listed on the first two pages.  The plan for next month is to increase these listings further and to focus on getting some of our other web pages higher in the search listings.

May 2008 - Continued Improvement

After the recent success with our SEO campaign, our next aim was to take our SEO exposure up a notch and improve our exposure in all the major search engines.  We were not ranking as well in the ASK or MSN search engines and our target for this month was to improve our search listings in both these search engines.  We also targeted to increase our website visits through targeted SEO techniques.

This month we underwent some research into the search popularity of our chosen keywords/search terms and narrowed down our list to the most searched search terms in search engines.  As a result, in four weeks we have increased our website visits from all search engines by 39% of which 73% are new visitors.

Next month we plan to improve the listings of our targeted keywords/search terms even more and increase new visitors to our site.

June 2008 - One step closer...

May saw our search rankings increase in the ASK and MSN search engines.  For June we went back to our original focus on maintaining higher rankings in all the leading search engines.  Through our SEO efforts we have managed for the sixth consecutive month to increase the number of visits to our site from search engines.  In June, 42% of all visitors to our site were from search engines. With an increase of 14% from last month resulted in 62% of these searchers as new visitors.  Next month we will be focusing on new search terms and keywords to furthermore attempt new visitors to our website.

July 2008 - Back to the drawing board

After last months efforts to maintaing higher rankings in the leading search engines, we still had one more hurdle to overcome. Despite ranking highly for some of our popular chosen search terms/keywords, the targeted landing pages were not listing as well as could be. So for July part of our SEO plans focused on resolving this and as a result our efforts have paid off. For example, "SEO services Essex" now ranks 6th in Google and "software development services essex" is now number 1 on MSN search (both correct at time of writing). We aim to continue the success of our increased SEO rankings for August and will be looking to maintain an increase in the number of visitors coming from search engines.

August 2008 - Time is of the essence

August was a quiet month for our own SEO efforts on our website due to the workload and as a result, some of our rankings for our chosen keywords have dropped. However the number of visitors coming from search engines has only dropped by 1.5% but the number of visitors coming from referring websites has increased by 3% which can be put down to our link building techniques. We plan to continue to rank highly for our chosen keywords/search terms, so we will aim to become more dominant in the search engines.

Over the last six months we have significantly improved our search engine rankings. If you would like to know how we can apply the same level of results for your website then please call one of our SEO experts today on 01206 235 007
